Leading Global Teams: More Than Just English

Why Global Teams Need More Than Just English to Thrive

One of the most rewarding parts of my career was leading a culturally diverse, partly remote team.
We all spoke English—but that didn’t guarantee understanding.

More Than Language

I quickly learned that international communication is about:

  • Connection

  • Clarity

  • Curiosity

Here’s what worked for me:

  1. Do Cultural Homework
Learn how communication styles differ. Directness in Germany is not the same as in Portugal.

  2. Learn a Few Words in Their Language
A simple “Bună ziua” to my Romanian colleagues changed the tone immediately.

  3. Keep English Simple
Short sentences. Avoid idioms. Give everyone space to process.

  4. Follow Up in Writing
Summaries ensure alignment across time zones.

  5. Build Connection Beyond Work
Talk about music, food, and traditions—it builds trust.

  6. Make Time for 1:1s
Private conversations reveal insights you’d never hear in a group.

Why This Matters

When people feel safe, seen, and supported, they speak up.
That leads to better:

  • Communication

  • Trust

  • Creativity

  • Outcomes

If you lead or work in a global team, what’s one thing you do to build connection?
